42 Year Old Medic Veteran To Be Seeks Grant Money For Physical Therapy Pool

by Benjamin Lowery
(Smithdale, MS, USA)

My name is Benjamin, and I am a 42-year-old happily married man and father of two.

My stepson is 19 and my daughter is 8. Both kids are exceptionally smart. I couldn't be a prouder parent.

I am an Army Medic and full-time AGR active duty component of the Mississippi Army National Guard and have been serving my country for almost twelve years.

In the last week of March 2009, I was given orders to deploy May 1, 2009 to Iraq. My wife and kids were devastated.

We were given only thirty days notice. Our daughter was graduating from kindergarten in mid May. There was so much to do in such a short time.

We had several unfinished projects around the house, not to mention the sudden financial and personal matters we had to immediately handle.

While in Iraq, I unknowingly fractured my foot and blew out two discs in my lower lumbar.

The terrain there is horrible, however, military standards requires us to maintain physical fitness, so running was required unless you were profiled.

During one of my runs, I turned my ankle on the rocks and fell down. It began swelling and was treated as a sprain.

The physical therapists on base recommended that I swim to help rehabilitate my foot. After a couple of weeks, I was back running, but the pain hadn't completely subsided.

Assuming the pain would eventually go away, I continued running and swimming. I participated in twelve running events including a half marathon.

It wasn't until I returned home that I found out the extent of my injuries. X-rays showed that I had fractured my foot and the bones had fused together.

That is why I had continuous pain. Physical therapy was required and it was again suggested that I swim to help with rehabilitation.

I have since been profiled and now must ride a stationary bike for my physical training.

For my back pain, I'm wearing a prescription back support. Surgery is an option, but I am not considering that right now.

In February of this year (2011), my wife was laid off from her job, and the company has since closed. This was her second job loss in less than one year.

She has worked over half her life, mostly in banking and finance. She is still unemployed and searching for a job. That is why I must continue full force, even in pain.

I have been so financially blessed throughout our situation. My household was built on two incomes but is now operating with one.

I have sold many replaceable equipment items from around the house to pay off debt. My wife is receiving unemployment benefits, but that won't last for long.

My request is to seek funds to help with the installation of a pool for physical rehabilitation.

We live in a rural area. Community pools are not available and a country club membership is an unnecessary monthly expense right now.

Thank you for your consideration of my request on whatever level of financial support.

I must maintain my physical fitness and medical readiness for my next deployment.
