Home repairs badly needed Home repairs badly needed Home repairs badly needed Home repairs badly needed

My name is Joseph Tschudy, I'm 32 years old. I reside in Cedar Grove NJ. I have custody of my six-year-old son and have a one-year-old daughter.

I served a total of 13 years In the Army, 10 of them active, with a tour to Iraq in 2003.

Disability Issues

I was declared a 100 percent disabled and unemployable vet by Veteran affairs in April 2015.

I have PTSD, which affects my ability to do day-to-day activities.

I also was diagnosed with degenerative disk disease in my L4/L5 disk in my back.

I had a major surgery on my ankle/foot in 2004, which left me with a screw and a need for pain injections quarterly every year.

Financial Hardship

I am lucky to be a homeowner, but with the fixed income I am unable to make the necessary repairs to make my home safe for my children and myself.

My basement wall is caving in and I have constant water in the basement, which is causing a mold issue.

Some windows could be replaced to help keep the cold out and heat in through the winter.

Income Efforts

I believe due to my age I was denied SSI, but am in the appeal process.

I have been looking for all benefits I might qualify for to help out in the meantime with bills and my children's medical expenses and daily needs.

Specific Needs

I am in search for a grant to help with repairs to my home to repair structural damage and make it more energy efficient.

Also any help in what is needed to receive SSI would be greatly appreciated.

Suggestions
by: Allison

Great job with your story!

My I suggest you go to benefits.gov website, complete the questionnaire and review the suggestions based on your situation. There a lot of questions specific to Vets.

There is also a home repair website that is sponsored by your state's Finance Agency. Here's what NC website looks like:

http://www.nchfa.com/nonprofits/HRRhomerepair.aspx

The construction company has been chosen; you need to find out when they will be coming through your area, get the date they will be accepting applications and call the first day as early as possible.

I have missed the dates because I did not follow it closely enough, but I have one more chance Sept 1.

Your state should have weatherization programs, but if you google it, go through the Dept of Health and Human Services to make sure it's legit. Applications are income based and you have to really poor to be accepted.

The best to you!
Allison
