My name is Madelyne Cotto. I am a 34-year-old single mother with a two-year-old son.

Madelyne Cotto And Son

I lived in Worcester, MA for 30 years until I moved to Philadelphia, PA to be with my son's father. I've been here for four years now.

After my son was born his father decided he was done raising kids and left me. I felt alone, abandoned and betrayed.

Disability Issues

I've always suffered from anxiety and depression but never received treatment for it. I decided to seek help after my son's father left me, when my depression worsened.

My anxiety got so bad I could barely leave my house. I now receive therapy once a week and I take medication.

My two-year-old son was diagnosed with autism and it threw me for a loop. I fell into a deeper depression.

I also felt guilty because I thought it was my fault he was sick. I could barely get out of bed. It was a very dark and hard time for me.

Financial Hardship

I receive $755 in SSI for my son. It covers the cost of:
Rent - $473
Gas - $35
Electric - $56
Water - $30

That leaves me with $161 for the rest of the month for me and my son's personal items like diapers and toiletries and clothes.

I don't have a car. I am unable to drive due to my anxiety so I rely on family members for transportation to my appointments.

I am unable to work due to my depression and anxiety. I get really agitated and anxious when I'm around a lot of people, which has prevented me from working and providing for my son.

Income Efforts

I applied for SSI and Social Security which was denied at first and now I'm appealing it. It's been about two years now.

I also receive help from my mother. Whenever she can, she'll send me $20 or $40.

My son's father buys my son clothes, shoes and diapers whenever he can.

Organizations through my son's therapist have helped me with clothes and diapers for my son and I. I also receive food stamps.

Specific Needs

I am seeking a grant for the following:

My kitchen, bathroom and son's room need upgrading.

My kitchen sink leaks. My cabinets are more than 20 years old and all my windows need replacing.

The paint around all my windows in the house are chipping and I'm concerned about lead poisoning. Windows are very old.

My bathroom ceiling leaks when it rains, there's obvious damage to it. Wall paper is peeling. The vanity and sink is detaching from the wall.

My son sleeps in my room in his play pen. I don't have any furniture for him and the carpet needs replacing. They're over 18 years old.

I also need new sofas. Over the summer I had no air conditioning so the leather peeled off the sofa and my son eats it sometimes. They look horrible and I'm embarrassed to have guests come over.
