Disabled Blind Man Seeks Grant To Pay For Medical Attention And Home

by Timothy May
(Texarkana, Arkansas, USA)

I am a 42 years old. I am currently staying at my mother's house. My mother is the greatest mother in the world.

I have a daughter that is grown. She is a very hard worker and a great daughter.

I have a dog named Scarlet. She is a Siberian Husky. I try to play with her or take her for walks every day. She is my best friend in the whole world.

Disability Issues

I have worn glasses since I was about four years old. The doctor told me I would be legally blind by the time I was 21 years old. Well, I beat that by a long shot.

I continued to work as a mechanic and a truck driver. I really enjoyed being self-sufficient.

In February of this year I was diagnosed with ocular albinism. The doctors really don't know much about this disease.

The only way I know to describe how this disease affects me is to say that your eyes are like a camera. They focus. The pigmentation is what helps your eyes to focus. Without pigmentation your eyes can't focus.

I went to three different eye doctors about my condition.

I went to the first doctor to get new glasses. He said there was no need to get new glasses after he tested my eyes. This was when I first heard about ocular albinism. The doctor said that I was not to do anything that required sight.

The second doctor I went to see was a specialist. He examined my eyes and asked what I wanted him to do for me. I told him I wanted him to help me see again. He said that there was nothing he could do for me. He told me to get a pair of dark glasses and deal with it. Then he walked out of the room.

The third doctor was also a specialist. He agreed with the first two doctors that there was nothing that could be done.

After all of this, I was declared disabled. In July 2013 I started receiving Disability benefits.

Financial Hardship

I get $1,075 a month on disability.

I can't afford medical or dental insurance.

I had Medicaid but they had cut it off while I was in the middle of getting my teeth fixed. They told me unless I had $3,075 in medical bills I couldn't get on Medicaid.

I won't be eligible for Medicare until sometime in 2014.

After paying for my ride to and from town, utilities and rent, I have nothing left over.

I cannot drive with my condition so I have to depend on friends and family to help me.

The doctors told me that they make dark glasses for my condition but they are very expensive.

My mom helps me with food so I'm grateful for that.

Income Efforts

I have tried to get some odd jobs to do for extra money. However, if you can't see to do the job, you don't get the job.

I get Social Security Disability.

When I can, I go to church to get some food or clothing, but they only allow that once every three months. Usually, it's not enough to get you through. Then you have to start looking again.

I have tried for grants when I could.

Specific Needs

I am seeking a grant so I can get medical attention.

I also want money to afford my own place.

I wish to go back to school to teach English as a second language certificate.

When my girlfriend and I decide to get married it will be a little easier for us if I have my own place and not have to struggle so hard.
