Disabled National Guard And Army Veteran Seeks Grant Or Short Term Money

by Alvin Lee Carey
(Warner Robbins, Georgia, USA)

My name is Alvin Carey. I was born in the rural south and spent my early childhood days working in the cotton fields to help supplement my mother's income.

She herself was working three jobs and depended on the income produced by me and my four other brothers to support a family of seven as a single mother.

I did this until I joined the National Guard while in the 11th grade. I attended basic training at Ft. Benning Georgia under the split option program.

Upon completion of basic I returned to high school and upon graduation returned to Ft. Benning to complete my advanced infantry training.

I married my high school sweetheart and upon completion of my 6-year obligation, I joined the Army full time.

I was first assigned to Ft. Campbell Kentucky (101st airborne/air assault division). I was shortly thereafter deployed to Iraq in support of Desert Shield and Desert Storm.

I was there for a little less than a year and spent the first Thanksgiving and Christmas away from my family.

It is a humbling experience to be away from your wife and child and to spend the holidays in a foxhole.

Upon my return I was then stationed to Germany for 3 years and then to Ft. Carson Colorado.

Due to the fact that my MOS (job skill) was over strength I was forced to take an involuntary separation after 13 years of military service to my country.

I had planned on retiring and my life was on course to provide for my family.

Since my separation I have tried my hand at real estate, pest control, generator mechanics, carpentry and just about everything in between.

However, due to the fact that my physical health has declined over the past few years, I am no longer able to hold a job for any length of time.

I have been diagnosed with PTSD and have all of the symptoms of Gulf War Syndrome: extreme pain, extreme fatigue, constant joint and muscle pain, memory loss, depression and a feeling of hopelessness.

I also experience extreme anxiety. I have constant headaches, and I have difficulty concentrating on even the smallest details.

I have trouble sleeping which not only affects me but my spouse as well.

I was recently terminated from my last job as a pest technician due to my inability to remain focused on the task I was assigned and due to the fact that I am no longer able to crawl under houses.

I also no longer possess the organizational skills required to make appointments and to be on those appointments on time due to the fact that I sometimes get disoriented and forget where I am.

I am the sole moneymaker in my home, which consists of my wife, my daughter, my son, and, my daughter's 11-month-old baby.

I have tried to get help from the Veterans Administration but constantly run into the red tape that the government is famous for.

What I need now is financial relief immediately. Is there anyone out there that has the compassion to help a good man get through these hard times until I can get some help from some other source?

I do not want a handout, just a helping hand to get me through these rough times. Christmas is coming and I am very depressed at the thought of not being able to provide for my family at what should be a joyous time of year.

Someone please help me. I will personally repay any funds given to me at this desperate time in my life.

God bless and peace be with you always. Alvin Lee Carey.
