Accident Disabled Man Seeks Vehicle And Education Grants For Self And Wife
(Murfreesboro, Tennessee, USA)
I'm a 61 year old man, married for 28 years with two grown sons and seven beautiful grandchildren, two of which my youngest son took in when their mother was unable to care for them.
I'm a huge Elvis Presley fan, enjoying not only his music, but movies as well. I used to sing in a band but since my disability I have given that up.
I was in a car accident with my eldest son about 15 years ago. A teenage girl who had just gotten her license came around a curve on the wrong side of the road and hit us head on.
I suffered a chipped vertebra that the doctors decided was too dangerous to remove as it was close to several nerves. If they had chosen to operate and had made a mistake I would have been paralyzed for the rest of my life.
Almost six years ago I was diagnosed with prostate cancer, which was treated with radiation and a procedure called Radiation seed implant, which seemed to work and I thought I was cancer free.
Then last December when I went for my follow up the Doctors found a spot next to my spine that upon tests confirmed the cancer had moved. So now I am back under treatments for what the doctor has classified as 4th stage bone cancer.
After the car accident I had to quit work, as I was no longer able to pick up heavy objects. And since I was a delivery driver for Havertys Furniture I could no longer continue the job.
My education did not allow me the ability to get other jobs. I didn't finish high school, so my prospects for employment were slim.
My son was just a small boy at the time and when I became disabled to work it also affected what I was able to do with him. We couldn't go out and do father and son things, as I was usually in pain from the bone chip pressing against the nerves in my neck.
I also couldn't do the normal chores of mowing the grass, trimming the hedges, etc. Those tasks fell to my wife who became responsible for all the daily chores, as well as working full time outside the home and caring for our son.
I no longer drove as it was hard for me to turn and look over my shoulder so I only drove if and when I didn't have any choice, and if it included a doctor's appointment or an emergency situation.
My doctor insisted I sign up for my disability, which I did and after several years and a court hearing I got my disability started.
But what I drew didn't cover all the bills and it is only because my wife worked that we managed to make ends meet.
My wife lost her job with Borders Group this past August when the company closed its doors in bankruptcy.
So currently we are trying to pay our bills on my monthly check of $832 and her weekly unemployment check of $275 a week. And that is due to run out shortly because she can only draw that amount for 26 weeks. After that the extension kicks in, but her check will drop to $240 a week.
I am looking for a grant that will help to pay off my truck and the loans we took out. I also would love to get a grant to send my wife back to school so she won't have to work the rest of her life in a warehouse on concrete.
She would like to study computer programming, but unless we can get the bills paid off, and some money to help with living expenses and to pay for schooling, that will never be something she will be able to do.
