Accident Disabled Man Spent Workers Comp Now Seeks Debt Assistance Grants

I am an African American male who is soon to be 40 years old. I suffered a work accident that left me with one leg and in debt.
As a result, I'm looking for debt assistance grants, having spent the workers comp money, as well as our savings.
I have been married to my high school sweetheart for 17 wonderful years. I am blessed to have two incredible boys. My purpose for life is my family. They are why I'm continuing to live and able to tell this story.
I consider myself a blessed man, but I also have to live with the fact that something that was a part of me is now gone.
In 2001, I had been on my new job for almost two years. I was a forklift driver who worked for a well-known company.
One particular night I went in for work and one of the 2000 lb paper rolls slipped coming down towards me. I immediately jump out from the lift thinking I would be safe.
Little did I know that the paper roll would catch my right leg. I was pinned under the forklift for about 45 minutes.
I was screaming at the top of my lungs for help, but no one could hear me because of the loud machinery.
Finally, I was able to push the forklift off me and crawl to the front door for help.
I had to have seven blood transfusions because of losing so much blood. I lost my right leg (below the knee) because the paper roll crushed it.
My recovery went well with the help of my wife and a strong will to fight. I do wear a prosthetic and try really hard to live with this situation.
I did obtain a lawyer for this accident. He never contacted me after meeting with this well-known company. This led me to believe the company paid him off.
I made several attempts to contact the lawyer, but was brushed off each time. I tried, but no other lawyer would touch this case leaving me with nothing.
This really has taken a toll on my family life, marriage and dealing with the loss mentally. I am currently working two full-time jobs just to make ends meet.
I have had some setbacks due to being on my feet too much, but I have to provide for my family.
I have to take pain medication for the rest of my life because I had to have a muscle taken out my back in order to have some cushion on my stump.
I tell myself every day that things will get better, but mentally I fight with myself that I am not in constant pain. Yes, I am thankful to be alive, but I never thought my life would be this difficult.
Before the accident I was approved for a loan on a new house based on my earnings on that job.
My wife at the time had to take a six-month leave of absence without pay to take care of me.
We used all our savings, and workers comp money to pay our normal bills.
Although this accident took place 10 years ago we have never recovered from the loss. I tried on 3 occasions to get disability, but was turned down each attempt.
I now work two full-time jobs to take care of my family. We have lost a vehicle, gone through bankruptcy and created a lot of debt.
My church has been very supportive. I am not sure about how grants work so this is a new process for me.
In any case, I'm now looking for debt assistance grants, having spent the workers comp money, as well as our savings.
