Couple With Multiple Disabilities Seeks Grant Money For Vehicle With Lift

by Linda
(Haines City, Florida, USA)

My name is Linda Moore. I have been married to Randylyn Moore for 33 years. We bought a motor home and a used sports car a little over 2 years ago.

Our dream was to come to Florida to help his parents and to start traveling across the country. We sold our property in West Virginia to do all this.

Disability Issues

After arriving in Florida, his parents were pretty bad off. His father had macular degeneration and was unable to drive anymore. His mother was in end renal disease and had to have her dialysis 3 days a week.

We arrived here in December of 2010. You can imagine we jumped in and did everything we could to help.

I was diagnosed with severe spinal stenosis and 3 ruptured disc, bone spurs, and severe arthritis of the spine. So I was limited on helping.

In October of 2010, my husband drove his father to the garage. He had his vehicle serviced and got ill while there.

On the drive back, he was all over the road. They stopped to get me to drive. My husband was getting worse so I took him to the hospital.

He had 10 strokes in a week and was in intensive care. He lost the whole right side and it affected his swallowing for a while.

After months of therapy as well as in and out of rehab and hospitals, he had some use of the right side and is in the motor home.

He had numerous medical problems. He is a severe diabetic, COPD, high blood pressure, 7 heart stents, bipolar, depression, enlarged heart, and congestive heart failure. He has right knee replacement and numerous surgeries on the left knee.

I am also diabetic. I am currently being treated for depression along with all back issues.

Financial Hardship

We only get $1,112 a month.

As you can imagine, that doesn't even get us through the month with rent, electric, medical bills, etc. We are out of money usually after the first week of the month.

I have applied for disability but have been denied twice. Now, I have to wait for 12 to 14 months to even get a court date.

Our biggest problem is we desperately need a vehicle for his power chair. Right now, I have to lift a regular wheelchair in and out of the sports car.

It is really making my back so much worse. Most of the time, I have to lie in bed to get the pain to lessen a little.

We get $113 a month in food stamps. We also live out of food banks even though it’s hard to get the right food for diabetics.

He can't use his power chair in the motor home. Thus, we want to move back north and get a place as soon as we can figure out how to get a vehicle.

I have to help him get in the little shower and wash him. I have to help dress him and everything else. It is very hard for him to get up without my help.

I don't know how much longer my health will hold out. I may have to have a surgery on my back. I don't see how living in this motor home and taking care of him will work.

Income Efforts

The motor home is old and not worth much and the car was used when we bought it. I have tried to find a job but no luck.

I have applied for disability but it’s going to be a long time before I know anything.

We go to three different churches for food to make it through the month. We don't have any friends. Our parents are in their 80s and on fixed incomes.

The rest of our family is in West Virginia. They could give me some help once we find a way to move back there.

Specific Needs

We are seeking any help we can find in getting a vehicle with a lift so my husband can ride his power chair into. Donation grants, anything at all.

We desperately need help getting this. We want to alleviate how I lift things and a way to get back to West Virginia so we can find a place where he can use his power chair all the time.

I don't know what else to do but ask for help anywhere I can. I pray daily to have the strength to continue one more day. That’s how I survive but it's so hard. I have faith that it will get better.

Hang In There! The Sun Will Shine.
by: Claudy

As a fellow Floridian, you need to realize Social Security tells everyone 'no' at least once and usually twice. You will get it eventually. Trust me, I get it! Just think you are saving a payment each and every month that goes by. It builds up quite a nest egg. What do you do in the meantime? Your story is moving and Accessible has great successes so that's good. Contact your County's social services listed under government in the front of your phone book. I think they will pay you rent and electric once a year. They do here in Hillsborough County. Salvation Army may also have funds and the State of Florida has programs. There is a Social Worker at the hospital where you frequent that can direct to help also. Being disabled is hard work! But you will succeed if you just hang in there. You can do it and you will. Finally, most every place of worship has funds. A lot of times government subsidized funds are available at places of worship. You sound strong of mind! If your body would just cooperate... Your hardship will subside. Keep your eyes on the prize. Good luck in heaps to you.
