Dad With Multiple Disabilities Seeks Home Improvement Grant Money
(Walhalla, Michigan, USA )
My name is Edward Negele Jr. I was born June 10, 1964 in Hammond Indiana. I have one sister and four brothers.
My parents were divorced. Our mother passed away when I was 18 years old. I played a big role in raising my younger siblings.
I met my wife about 18 1/2 years ago. Prior to getting married, I adopted her daughter. She is now my daughter. I have raised her and she is a successful member of our society.
Five years after we were married, we had a little boy named Zachary. He is now 12 years old. I also have 2 wonderful granddaughters and a great son-in-law.
My father passed away 4 years ago.
I was working when I married my wife in 1995. I was also attending college at that time. I had routine eye surgery in 1996, in which they found I had irregular heart rhythms.
I was referred to a cardiologist. After a battery of tests, I was told I couldn't work.
There is a strong family history of cardiac problems in my family. My mother died at 43 and one of my brothers died at 28.
After filing bankruptcy, I went through a lot of testing. I have had multiple cardiac ablations with an AICD implanted.
In 1997, I had my first stoke at the age of 32. Since then, I have had a total of 3 cardiac stents placed and diagnosed with idiopathic cardiomyopathy.
I was diagnosed with esophageal cancer. That was about 6 years ago when our son was in his 1st grade. I went under an extensive surgery to remove my esophagus.
My survival rate was less than 3% for 5 years. I have beaten those odds but not at a cost.
I now have malabsorption issues due to the surgery. I have developed osteoporosis and osteopenia. I have also broken my leg last year.
What I really need to improve is the outside of my house.
I have a sand driveway and no garage. Even with my wife working, we can't afford to make the changes we need.
It is dangerous for me to go out especially during winter. This is because my chances of falling are great.
We also have vehicle issues. We are down to one vehicle which isn't running well.
We are in need to help finish the outside of our house and maybe a safer vehicle. A vehicle that is easier for me to get in and out of.
I am on permanent social security disability. I don't qualify for SSI.
We have received help in the past from my wife's parents. However, they are aging and have a limited income.
My wife works full time. We are able to manage household bills and mortgage. However, we cannot afford updates or household improvements.
We are looking at obtaining benefits and grants to improve our property. This is for us to ensure a safer environment so "accidents" don't hinder my current medical condition.
We can't afford to pay any more loans or add payments to what we already have.
