My name is Roy McDaniel. I am 65 years old, and live in Cumming, Georgia. I have been married for 43 years, and have three children and two grandchildren.

I am an artist and craftsman. I have worked my whole career in reinforced plastics: including design, development, prototyping, tooling and production.

I have designed and fabricated auto components, aircraft components, marine products, art, furniture and bath products.

I have had multiple motorcycle accidents that resulted in surgery and permanent injury, along with a neck injury that also required major surgery.

Only a few years later I had a stroke, and I am paralyzed on my right side. With of all of my problems I have been diagnosed to be more than 100% disabled.

However through all of my mishaps and injuries I have continued to work and support my family.

Disability Issues

I was involved in two different motorcycle accidents that resulted in major surgery after both accidents. The first accident I had a kidney removed; the second accident I had broken my back in two places.

A few years later I slipped and fell on the ice during a winter storm, fracturing two vertebras in my neck, also requiring major surgery.

Just a short time later in 2010, I suffered a stroke, and I am paralyzed on my right side. After all of my health issues I have been evaluated as 110% disabled, complicated with Type 2 diabetes.

I continue to work, but I do have to be careful to not further injure myself. I am on multiple medications and at times it is difficult to get around and I will have to stop and rest

Financial Hardship

Through all of the years of accumulative injuries, after each incident I would go back to work, even after I suffered a stroke that has left me paralyzed on my right side.

I continued to work for three years after, until my employer terminated me for being too disabled. Without an income, we had to rely on savings to pay our bills.

I looked for employment for a year without any success. It seems that no one would employ anyone with my disabilities.

Trying to keep a positive attitude, and focus on my abilities rather than my disabilities, I considered becoming self-employed. No one is going to hire me but me.

Income Efforts

I am receiving SSDI, but that is only enough to cover my house payment.

My wife and I started a small business using our savings and retirement money. It has been a financial struggle with limited start up funds. We have managed but it is becoming increasingly more difficult.

The financial pressures and the physical requirements are putting my wife and me to an extreme test.

We have not received any outside help from friends, family, church or help organizations. This is the reason for my letter. I need help.

Specific Needs

I need help, possibly a grant for a disabled business owner. I am not sure of what is available for personal help.

My wife and I have never received any help in the past; we have always have helped others in need.

We need with our house payment and other personal needs. I also need help with an invention/business idea.

Business Idea

I have had a 45-year career in reinforced plastics, developing new products in several different industries.

The business that I am in now is designing, prototyping, building original masters and making tooling for the cast polymer industry.

It's mainly for cast bathroom products, shower pans, wall panels, vanity tops and bathroom sinks.

About 75% of these products are for hospitality applications, multifamily structures, college dorms and invalid care homes.

The idea that I have developed is to manufacture the same items so that they weigh less, are much stronger and have less toxic impact on the environment.

For example a standard shower pan that would be in a home or hotel in a cat material will weigh 300 lb. A shower pan using my process will weigh only 60 lbs, and be five times stronger.

The current method of manufacturing is open mold casting, releasing volatile VOCs into the atmosphere. My proposed method of manufacturing is a closed mold with no VOCs, resulting in a lighter, stronger, environmental friendly product.

Currently there are no manufacturers using this process. I need financial help to complete development, tool up and manufacture. This process could be a revolution in the industry.
