by Finesse Sumpter
(Philadelphia, PA, USA)

My name is Finesse Sumpter and I'm 25 years of age. I have a 10-month-old daughter named Jurnni.

Basically, my intentions in life are to raise my baby girl the right way and keep us both healthy. I also want to help other people by opening my own shelter.

Disability Issues

I have a condition called Krabbe disease, a rare disease that caused me not to have any marrow in my bones. Typically, it only happens to boys. I'm one of a million females to have this condition.

It affects my ability to walk, talk, feed and think for myself. Most people who are born with this disease typically perish at the age of two.

It also affects the nerves that control eyesight, so my optic nerves are damaged and I am blind. I was not born blind; I was diagnosed with this disease at the age of 11.

Financial Hardship

Due to my blindness, it is strenuous to obtain employment, so I receive $710 of SSI every month. I receive $330 in food stamps every month.

My main monthly expenses are: rent $450, cell phone $40 and my trail pass to get back and forth to school $135.

To wash and dry cloths is $60 every month and between buying things for my daughter and toiletries, I'm broke.

As of now, I am taking no medication and I have no assistive technology to help me with daily routines.

Income Efforts

I've looked repeatedly, yet unsuccessfully, for work.

I try, day and night, looking around for programs that can support me financially.

Also, I spend lots of time asking owners of computers to look up programs for me.

Specific Needs

I'm looking for help to get housing and employment.

Both my daughter and I need clothes badly.

I need help finding updates pertaining to my condition and if there is a cure.

I also seek dependable transportation because CCT does very little for me.

Business Idea

I want to obtain a clean, safe, warm and helpful women and children's shelter called "Lots of Love." It would have:
- personal rooms with mini refrigerator and beds, depending on the family size
- a chef, counselors and day and night security
- a playroom for the children
- a computer room open to everyone
- a janitorial team of two people to come and clean once a day
- a television room
