Disability Grant To Help Bipolar Disordered Christopher Get Used Car
by Christopher Berry
(Woodbury, Tennessee, USA)
I am Christopher Berry. I am bipolar, 28 years old and living with my mother, grandmother and step-grandfather.
I was born in Fulton, Missouri near a mental hospital where my mother was committed. My mother has had paranoid schizophrenia since age 17.
While she was in the hospital in Fulton, she was raped and that's how I got here. I have never known anything about my father.
I was in foster care for the first six months of life. Eventually, my grandmother got custody of me. I have lived with her ever since.
When I was five years old I was sexually molested by my mother. She could no longer live with us at the time. She was just too sick.
I have been bipolar my entire life. I had problems in kindergarten and was paddled nearly every day.
My teacher said I was too immature for school at the time and I ended up repeating kindergarten at a different school.
I have been on medication since the second grade. They had me on Ritalin, but it messed up my stomach so they put me on something else.
Fast forward to the 7th grade. I had even more problems at school and got sent to alternative school for threatening teachers twice.
By the 9th grade, I was starting to be very antisocial and having strong social anxiety with mood swings and depression.
My grades suffered because of this and I got mostly all F grades. This happened all four years of high school until I dropped out at age 19.
After school I went to find work from 2005 to 2008. I had LOTS of jobs and got fired or had quit at every one.
There were lots of days that were bad. I didn't feel the need to shower or go ANYWHERE.
I always think everyone hates me for being bipolar because a lot of people got very frustrated with me and fired me.
Now I am on Invega 9mg (paranoia), Lithium 300mg (mood swings), Propranolol (anxiety), Metformin (diabetes), Atorvastatin (cholesterol), and Levothyroxine (thyroid).Financial Hardship
Every dime I have goes to bills and I still have to get help from my grandmother and she doesn't have very much either.
My money goes to: food for the rest of the month after food stamps ($175), cell phone bill ($80) and rent ($350).
This doesn't include things like soap, shampoo, toilet paper, toothpaste, toothbrush, deodorant, paper towels, napkins, cleaning supplies and clothes.
I only have one pair of pants and five shirts I can wear.
I do have a car but it is broken down and I don't have a way to get to places unless it's on a Friday.Income Efforts
In 2009 I was approved for SSI/SSDI and I get $508.67 a month. I also get $110 from food stamps.
I tried to work some but I failed. For example, I didn't last at the Kroger gas station but I wasn't fast enough.
I also tried to work for my step-grandfather but he can't afford to hire someone.Specific Needs
I need a car. The one I have been eye-balling is a older car selling for $3,495. I would also have to pay tax, doc fees, etc.
I would also like to get on my feet and earn more income.
In total I am looking for $5000. This would take care of the car and I would be able to go to the doctor, the gym, the store for my grandmother, church and things like that.
This money would also give me a little financial strength and some independence. I would also like to see what other benefits I am eligible for.
