by Sim Runles
(Chicago, Illinois, USA)
I am 38 years old, born April 13, 1974. I've lived in Chicago all my life.
I have been through it all from the streets of Chicago to my BA from Columbia College.
I've tried to keep a job but I haven't managed to do it for the past three months. I am creating my own job now.
I am an African American father of five children.

My disabilities revolve around mental illness. I was diagnosed as schizoaffective with psychotic tendencies.
It was noticed when I was about eight. I realized I didn't deal with my problems well.
I am a cutter. I sliced up my own face with a sharp piece of glass because my mother punished me for something I did not do.
I have two encaved thumbs and I've been in surgery twice to fix holes in my heart, once at three months then again at 17.
This has left me with no friends and little to no understanding from family. My Illness has gotten worse over time.
It is a daily struggle yet it is a struggle I do my best to deal with every dayFinancial Hardship
I live on one of the worst sides of town! My rent is $600 a month. My apartment is infested with rats, roaches and bed bugs so I spend at least $50 a month in pesticides.
I get help for food but that only lasts 3/4 of the month. Usually by the 21st I'm out of food standing in the church line to feed myself.
My lights are $30 a month.
I can't afford to drive.
I had to drop out of school because I can't afford to go. Now I have loans to pay back.
All my meds require a $3 copayment and to visit my doctor, it's a $4 co-pay.
Trying to build my own business is also hard! I run an entertainment company for movies and music. Over time I have bought cameras, computers, programs, microphones, lights and many other items needed for my line of business.
It seems impossible to keep up with the changing technology. Everything is so expensive!Income Efforts
I've filled out applications online to find a job. I have a Monster account but little to no hits.
I've walked around my neighborhood asking different businesses if they need any help.
When I work at home I do amazing stuff. I am a video editor and a record producer.
I have taught myself how to perfect the knowledge I got from Columbia.
First they taught me basic programs and I used that knowledge to teach myself video editing software and audio editing software.
I've applied to the government, not-for-profit organizations and for-profit businesses for grants and it seems impossible to get any help.Specific Needs
I need help keeping up with my rent. Being on a fixed income leaves little room for anything but the rent and lights.
I need help getting small business equipment and keeping up with the fees attached to my business.
Any advice on what to do now would be lovely. No sympathy is needed. I just need a chance to prove to myself, and to the world, that I am not useless.Business Idea
I have a for-profit business called That's My Dogg Entertainment
I also have a not-for-profit organization called Hip-Hop NFP
. It is intended to help at-risk youth and underprivileged adults put their talents on a platform.
I am a local cable producer so I use that to put local artists on television. I use my equipment from That's My Dogg
to record the music and edit the footage.
I'm in the process of finishing a script and about to start shooting on a low-budget movie and soundtrack called The Trap. It's a movie about the effects of drugs and drug dealers on American society.
All this is being done with my own money and time. I need some assistance with all this. Anything you can do to help would be appreciated! Thank you!
